Ocean Course Tweaked for 2012 PGA
In August 2012, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island will host the 94th PGA championship and will become only the fifth course to host each of The PGA of America’s major championships—the Ryder Cup (1991), the Senior PGA Championship (2007), and the PGA Championship (2012). In preparation for the upcoming tournament, PGA officials have requested a slight tweak to the closing hole of the course to ensure it is played as designer Pete Dye intended.

Improved golfing gear like aerodynamic balls and high-performance clubs has allowed some golfers, including the Senior PGA players, to hit the ball 30 to 50 yards past where it was originally designed to land on the 18th fairway. To return the course closer to the intent of Dye’s design, the back two tee boxes will be moved closer to the ocean for the tournament. The redesign will force players to play the hole from a new angle and hit the ball around the dunes, rather than straight across. Pete Dye recently approved these changes when he was at Kiawah reviewing suggestions for the tournament.
