Open Doors: A Kiawah Island couple extends the hand of hospitality from their outdoor haven

When it comes to entertaining outside, Bob and Mo Flanagan could be considered experts. At their home located in Cassique, the couple has been known to host a variety of gatherings, from intimate dinners with as few as four people to more expansive celebrations with as many as 100. “We’ve even had a DJ on the patio to keep the mood lively for the larger crowds,” says Bob.

The Flanagans bought their home in 2005 and were the first new Garden Cottage homeowners in Cassique. “Prior to moving here, we lived out on Summer Island,” says Mo. “We were looking for something closer to Charleston, and Cassique was the perfect fit. Plus, we are within walking distance of Freshfields, the Sports Pavilion, the golf course, and the Clubhouse.”

With extended family spread across the country in California, New Jersey, and New York, the couple knew they needed plenty of room for guests. “We always have a large group here for both Easter and Thanksgiving,” says Mo. “And our family members from up north like to vacation at our home during June and July.”

While the couple’s Mediterranean-style home offers 3,500 square feet of space to accommodate all of these visitors, it is in the outside living areas where most everyone ends up congregating. “One of the best parts of our outdoor space is the privacy it affords,” explains Bob. “We have a screened-in area, as well as a large patio with a pool and Jacuzzi. Gas lanterns, a surround-sound stereo system, and beautiful views of our pond enhance the setting.”

Many nights, Bob can be found at the grill preparing fish or barbecuing spare ribs while Mo serves up refreshing beverages, such as homemade margaritas. The nearby fire pit sets the scene for relaxation and good conversation. “We always keep our gatherings laid-back and informal,” says Mo. “We have plenty of comfy chairs for guests to lounge in. I think those are a necessity for any outside entertaining space.”

When they aren’t enjoying time at home, Bob and Mo often take in a round of golf on Cassique’s Tom Watson-designed course. “It only takes us three minutes to walk to it,” says Bob. “That’s ideal for us since we are big-time golfers.”

The Sports Pavilion is another place the couple likes to frequent. “Yoga is one of our favorite fitness activities,” explains Mo, “and the Sports Pavilion has plenty of classes for us to choose from.”

In the mornings, the Flanagans sometimes ride their bikes over to Freshfields Village for breakfast. “We also like to go in the early evening for a fun dinner at Hege’s or La Tela,” says Mo. “Or we may decide to get in the car for the short drive to Charleston to take in a concert or a play.”

Adds Bob, “Cassique is close to everything and yet feels very private, especially when we are at home enjoying the beautiful surroundings in our own little haven. What more could you ask for?”
