The Countdown to Kiawah’s 2012 PGA Championship Begins

When Keegan Bradley earned his PGA card back in November at the Nationwide Tour Championship at another Charleston area golf course, he probably couldn’t imagine that eight months later, he would be competing in his first PGA Championship – let alone winning it. But that’s exactly what he accomplished on Sunday at the 2011 championship as he beat Jason Dufner in an exciting three-hole playoff.

As he tapped in his final putt for the win, the official countdown to the 2012 PGA Championship on Kiawah began.

Since the announcement was made in 2005 that the PGA had selected the Ocean Course to host the 2012 Championship, Kiawah residents and visitors have been looking forward to reliving the excitement of another PGA of America event. In 1991, the Ocean Course made history during the Ryder Cup and in 2007, the Senior PGA championship was held here.

As soon as tickets went on sale last November, the 2012 PGA Championship has broken records. Opening day ticket sales was the single largest day for ticket sales in PGA Championship history, and after the final putt last Sunday, the PGA released the remaining available tickets. Since then, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday have sold out, leaving tickets only for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday practice rounds and Thursday’s opening round. Those, too, are expected to sell out – and all an entire year before the tournament.

Preparations have been well under way and earlier this month, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort welcomed players to take on the Ocean Course in the same conditions as the pros will in 2012. And anyone who has played the Ocean Course knows, it’s tough out there.

Tournament officials and hospitality employees aren’t alone in preparing for a busy year leading up to the Championship. At Kiawah Island Real Estate, we are already seeing an increase in walk in visitors and web traffic. We expect to welcome more guests to the Island this coming year than ever before, and we are excited to share with them the unique lifestyle that generations of families have come to love and experience on Kiawah.
